Medication at School
A Medication Permission form is required for your student to be given any medication at school,
including over-the-counter medications. Over the counter medications may include Tylenol,
ibuprofen, ointments, cough drops, antihistamines, and more. This form must be completed and
signed by a licensed healthcare provider and a parent/legal guardian. Medication must be
brought to school in an appropriately labeled container from the pharmacy. Non-prescription
medications must be brought to school in the original container and labeled with the student’s
name.
Students are not allowed to possess or consume any prescription or over the counter
medication on school grounds with the exception of asthma medication, an epinephrine
auto-injector, and medication and supplies for diabetes care.
Students who self carry asthma medication and can administer it independently only require
written permission from a parent/guardian and must provide a prescription label from the
pharmacy.
Students who will possess and administer epinephrine at the student’s discretion require
permission from the physician and parent/guardian and a signed Medication Permission and
Instruction form.
Unassigned/Undesignated Medications
Bannockburn School will maintain a supply of unassigned albuterol, epinephrine, and Narcan,
when available. These medications are intended for individuals who may not have a prior
diagnosis of asthma, or severe allergy. Students with an emergency action plan must have
their own medication supply available at school. Emergency medication can be administered
when the school nurse or a trained staff member determines that they are necessary for the
safety of the individual. Narcan will be administered when an opioid overdose is suspected. In
all instances when unassigned medication is administered, parents will be notified. In some
instances, emergency medical services will also be contacted. Parents may notify the school in
writing that they do not want their child to receive unassigned medication.
